The Story Engine is officially on! (well, not quite)

Hey all, Ray here...

So Dean and I have finally booked our tickets for The Story Engine, a two-day conference for screenwriters comprising of cases studies, master classes, panel discussions, and workshops by leading industry gurus bla bla bla... It's my first time (Deano's 2nd) so I'm genuinely excited to see what all the fuss is about. We have a ton of "prep" work to do before hand (polishing up pitch documents, streamlining our verbal pitches, stocking up on strong cider etc) but it should be worth the effort and beneficial to our "careers" -- but only if we capitalize on actually being there! We both realize this jaunt up to Newcastle is no Jolly Boy's Outing, and that forking out all this cash and going on up there is only half the story (Pun? Me? No...)... Networking and hand-shaking and talking shop over lunch is just as important as scrabbling down notes in any given seminar... so come and say hello if you see us out 'n' about. Besides I have lovely soft hands!

Howdy all...

So Deano and I are attending a 90 minute talk/Q & A with Oscar and Bafta winner Mia Bay tonight. The event, organised by Northwest Vision & Media, is kicking off at 6:30 at NWVM HQ in sunny Salford. Should be a useful insight into the everyday toil of broke UK filmmakers... something we're quite familiar with, then!

Date: Monday 29th March

Time: 6.30 – 9.30pm

Venue: Northwest Vision and Media, Broadway 100, Salford M50 2UW

Mia Bays, Oscar-winning, twice BAFTA-nominated producer and sales/distribution consultant (for Digital Departures, for Microwave – eg ‘Shifty’, and the films ‘Tsotsi’, ‘Blindsight’ to name but a few) talks through her top 10 tips for for filmmakers and interested others on:

- how to make GOOD low budget films
- how to negotiate the complicated next steps of sales and distribution.

Mia will deliver a 90 minute talk on what she has learned working on over 45 features during 19 years in the business, from development to release. This will be followed by Q&A and networking drinks.

Greasy Spoon officially green lit, War Hero done, plus 2010 and beyond!

Hey, Ray here...

... The last few months have been hectic on the old writing and networking front, hence the lack of blogging -- but boy was it worth it!

Yup, we’ve had several shorts made, a couple of competition listings, and a whole heap of other cool contact-related stuff come about which we aim to build on throughout 2010.

One cool development is the official (ney, OFFICIAL!!) green light for our knock-around black comedy short, Greasy Spoon.

Developed and produced under the Northwest Vision Green Shoots funding scheme, GS should go into production in the next month or so.

Lensed by our good friend and Bafter nominated filmmaker Ed Lilly, we seriously cannot wait to see the final result. Lets just say there will be blood!

We’re also looking forward to the imminent birth of War Hero, one of the first short stories we ever co-wrote!

Helmed by an up and comer from across the pond (more details to follow!), WH is basically in the can and we’re just awaiting delivery of the final cut. Very exciting stuff!

So far so good, then.

But even with all this cool stuff on the go, it’s never a closed shop here at camp L & B as writing, networking, and film-making in general are our passion!

So if you fancy working with a talented writing partnership who are definitely going places, don’t hesitate to get in touch…lets make it happen!

Hey, Ray here...

... So Dean and I caught Ghostbusters at Manchester's Odeon Printworks last night.

Sadly, the print was a horrible mess of scratches, cuts, and a crappy-ass sound mix.

But who cares -- the film is an absolute gem!

It just goes to show how great a film it is when glitches like those listed above take nothing away from the story and characters. Here's to us writing a classic like this one day.

Now if only they'd screen Back To The Future and/or Jaws...

Greasy Spoon a go-go!

Aloha, Ray here...

... and it's with great pleasure that we announce another short film of ours -- Greasy Spoon -- has made the grade for this years Green Shoots 2009 funding scheme run by North West Vision + Media!

Yep, we got another commission!!

The script will be directed by Ed 'where's my Oscar?' Lilly and produced by Jolene 'money bags' Rathmill. Needless to say, we're in Schmeichel-esque safe hands with this sucker!

The script will be developed as part of the commission, so we can only hope it's an "enlightening" experience and not as painful as some horror stories we've heard about over the years (Mr. Rothman, I'm looking at you!). Joking aside, we have every confidence in the talented folks at NWVM and look forward to the whole process.

... Yep, another short film of ours -- After Eight -- has been officially selected for Bristol's Encounters Short Film Festival! How cool is that? Yet another string to our oboe (yes, I know it doesn't have...anyway).

Howdy y'all, Ray here...

... So, as I'm sure you're all aware by now, our short film -- Three Little Words -- didn't win the big prize at the VMS09.

BOOOOOO!!!!!

Joking aside (and cliches ahoy!) it was a pleasure just to be nominated. Kudos to Luke Snellin and co for their winning short, Mix Tape. Props to the other nominees, too.

One last thing: Developing TLW with Ed Lilly (of Blind Aura Pictures) was a complete pleasure, and I'm sure we'll enter something next year. Bring it on!

They're here...

THREE LITTLE WORDS is now available to watch for anyone who has the virgin on demand service in the UK. It's right there on "movies on demand" right next to big the big Hollywood Blockbusters. Feels good.

It will also be screened on regular broadcast TV on Virgin 1 on the 5th of September. It will play right after one of the most entertaining movies of the 80's. The fabulous John Milius directed, Kevin Reynolds scripted, evil commie killin' RED DAWN!
It will then be repeated on the 6th, and 12th of September. On both Virgin1 and Bravo. Again, can't tell you how cool this is for us. Less than a year ago we were yet to have a single thing produced. Nine months later and we get to see our work broadcast to pretty much every home in Britain. Exact listings can be found right here.

Did I mention we were in PLAYBOY?

In other news, we recently learned AFTER EIGHT is to play in competition at this years Encounters Film Festival in Bristol. Our first, real life, real world film festival. Very excited.

But it's not like we're now just sitting back and waiting for the fame and fortune to rain down upon us...(that would be one long ass wait!).
We've really been writing up a storm in the last month as well as... gulp... "networking". Sometimes (but not always) with real life human beingS! Directors mostly. All talented folks who want to work with us.
And you know.. Things are going great.
We have several scripts attached to directors from as far out as the USA to deepest, darkest London. Some handed in with funding applications to regional screen agencies and some being set up with private funding. All of them very different and at various stages of development. All of them fantastic fun to work on.

Also... did I mention that these crazy bastards let us on the premises recently?

Can't really say much about it at the moment... But all will be revealed.

This is a minute trailer for a film we worked on earlier this year with director Ed Lilly and Blind Aura Pictures. It's a story about being a teenager, dealing with peer pressure and the consequences of violence.

I think it turned out quite well.

Okay, so our film isn't The Ten Commandments.
But it also isn't an ass numbing 220 minutes long.

We received some fantastic news this week. THREE LITTLE WORDS has made it through to the final 12 of the www.virginmediashorts.co.uk short film competition. This not only means we now have a 1 on 12 chance of winning the 30 thousand pounds of film financing, to make another short film. But also means our little movie is now guaranteed a full theatrical distribution. It will be transferred to 35mm film and screened at over 200 cinemas across the UK for an entire year.

So you know those Orange ads that annoy the hell out of you before the movie starts in the theatre?

We'll be just like them!

We're obviously very excited about this news. Some writers spend their careers working and never get to see their work up on the big screen.. We're geting the chance with only our second produced short. Even if it is only 2 minute 20 seconds long. Lucky sods or what?

Hopefully this is just the start for us. After a few great networking events over the last week or so, we've managed to meet and correspond with some fantastic local filmmakers and get a real sense of the vibrant and welcoming movie scene that's going on here in the North West at the moment. I only hope we can become a meaningful part of it in the near future.

But now... back to the horrible, depressing, soul destroying and completely addictive blank page...

Treatments - Networking - Research

As busy as ever at the moment, preparing short film treatments and scripts for the Green Shoots 2009 scheme. We're working with a great director on some real interesting ideas. Fingers crossed. A great little short film could come out of this.

There's also a few great networking opportunities on the horizon too. The Future Artists event at the Urbis on Saturday and then VisionandMedia's "what makes a good short film" event the week after. Both should be a fantastic opportunity to meet like minded people in the area and get a feel for what's been going on in the Northwest film scene so far this year.

Age of Sail sci-fi? Well... not quite.

Also.. Amazon dropped off a few goodies this morning. Just a little research for a sci-fi idea that's been kicking about for a while. It's about as far away from the "low budget" features and short film scripts we've been writing over the last few months. But it's great subject that has not really been tackled before (or at least recently) in cinema. It could be a very fun project indeed.

Well... It was supposed to be a short film. What you see above is just a rough little teaser sketch from some of the footage shot on the first (and last) day of shooting... It was a disaster. Our lead hurt his leg the before the second day of shooting. We came back a week later to carry on and it was SNOWING making continuity impossible, so we held off for 2 more days only to come back and find our location was no longer available.

Gutted.

We planned on rethinking and starting again but in the end screenwriting seemed to take over.

We started working with a local production company who wanted to make some short films of their own and the next few months just seemed to fly by.

They've produced two of the shorts so far (AFTER EIGHT) being one of them. And the second being a gritty urban drama about the growing trouble of knife crime in our town and cities. That one is shot and cut and just waiting for release.

A third short is scripted and ready to going into production next week. It will be a quick shoot. Something short, sharp and hopefully funny. we hope to enter it into the VIRGIN SHORTS film making competition.

We were also contacted by local radio station WFM, who would also like us to help them out in the writing and producing of a short film to help promote their station. Deadline for that is also next week (eeek!).

On top of this we also have three new feature scripts on the go. All at different levels of progress all very exciting for us. Especially one of them. Which may just be the low budget feature film idea we've been looking for. Fingers crossed.

So overall it's been a busy few months.. Just not in the way we expected. We thought this year would be all about production for us. But it turns out we were destined to be tied to FINAL DRAFT for just a little bit longer. But still. It's nice to have people interested in our writing and wanting to work with us... Just wish some bleeder would offer us some MONEY to do it that's all.

It's coming together nicely now. We're shooting first thing in the morning. So there's a few more hours to add a few extra little switches and dials. But I'm digging where it's going.

Just hope the police don't pull us. The thing looks like a damn dirty bomb.

But other than that we're raring to go. Just made up some nice fake blood... Double checked the shot list. The batteries are charged and equipment packed.

We might just be ready.

Just need to finish teching down (thank you DV Rebel's Guide) a couple of white shirts for our lead and then I can get my head down for a good solid six hours of anxiety filled dreams...

This short really put a smile on my face when I stumbled across it this morning. All its elements come together perfectly. Great writing, great visuals and great acting. I'm so impressed. This kind of work is just inspiring. The kind of stuff that makes you want to go out and make movie.

And it comes at just at the right time for me too. I'm about halfway through a savage page cull in the latest rewrite for FENDING... It's hard work and can be pretty draining. Seeing work of this standard is like a lightening bolt of pure creative energy.

Just what I needed.

Thanks for that Ted Chung. Can't wait to see more from you in the future.

I've never enjoyed rewriting. I love the first draft. The pure creation that comes from attacking that blank page. But rewriting... that is always hard work. The hack and slash approach (that my throw everything AND the kitchen sink first drafts inevitably need) is always pure agony. But hey... When you end up with a 155 page first draft and it's not LAWRENCE OF ARABIA 2 you're writing. You just know you need to lose pages...

And so it begins. I wanna cut at least 40. It's gonna hurt. There's gonna be tears.. But it shall be done.
